How linear feet are counted

Linear feet measure floor space along the length of the trailer, not volume. A trailer interior runs roughly 98 to 102 inches wide, so two standard 48×40 pallets sit side by side if they are loaded 40-inch face forward. Each row of two then consumes 48 inches — four linear feet — regardless of how tall or light the freight is.

The calculator assumes two units per row when each is 50 inches wide or less, and one per row above that. Stackable freight halves the number of floor positions, which is usually the cheapest lever available to a shipper: the same goods, half the trailer, no rule triggered.

Why the threshold matters

LTL pricing assumes your freight shares a trailer. When one shipment takes an outsized share of the floor, carriers stop rating it by weight and class and start applying capacity-load, linear-foot, or cubic-capacity rules — typically a much higher minimum charge, sometimes a rate as if the shipment weighed far more than it does.

The trigger point is tariff-specific. Many carriers engage a rule at 12 linear feet; others wait until 20; some use a combined test of linear feet and low density. There is no universal number, so read the rules document for whichever carrier you are quoting. What is universal is the shape of the outcome: cross the line and LTL stops being the cheap option.

How many pallets fit on a 53 foot trailer?

Twenty-six standard 48×40 pallets on the floor, or fifty-two if the freight stacks two high. The arithmetic: a 53-foot trailer is about 100 inches wide inside, so two pallets sit side by side loaded 40-inch face forward. Each row of two then eats 48 inches — four feet — of the trailer's 53 feet of length. Thirteen rows of two is twenty-six.

Load the pallets the other way round, 48-inch face across, and only two still fit per row but each row consumes 40 inches instead of 48, giving fifteen rows and thirty pallets. That is why loaders care which way a pallet is turned, and why "how many pallets fit" has more than one right answer.

What is the linear foot rule in LTL?

A tariff provision that lets a carrier rate a shipment on the trailer space it occupies rather than its weight and class. It exists because a light, bulky shipment can fill a trailer while generating very little revenue under weight-based pricing. Thresholds vary by carrier — commonly 12 or 20 linear feet — and the charge is usually a much higher minimum or a deemed weight.

How many linear feet is a standard pallet?

A 48×40 pallet loaded with the 40-inch side facing forward pairs with a second pallet across the trailer, and the pair consumes 4 linear feet. So two pallets is 4 linear feet, four pallets is 8, six is 12 — which is exactly where the first carrier rules tend to engage.

Does stacking reduce linear feet?

Yes, and it is usually the single most effective change available. Stacking two high halves the floor positions and therefore halves the linear feet. The freight has to actually support the load — carriers will not stack anything the bill of lading marks as non-stackable, and they will not restack it for you.
